This popular liner operated a monthly transatlantic route from 1956 to 1973 with a turnaround at Port Everglades. It carried Europeans to Venezuela and Florida, and handled interport bookings as well. Decorated with murals, wood carvings of saints and paneling from the African colonies, the Santa Maria was sedate, conservative and elegant. Its claim to fame however was an infamous hijacking to Brazil in 1961.
