Braniff International Airways

Early Jetliners to Florida

Braniff International Airways Using Douglas DC-4 and DC-6 propeller aircraft, Braniff International Airways began service from Dallas to Panama and South America via Miami in 1951. Their chief competitor was Pan American-Grace Airways (Panagra). Expanding service in 1956, their DC-7-B propeller aircraft began operating over Eastern Airlines' New York - Washington - Miami route then over their own routes from Miami to Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires via intermediate points.

Braniff International Airways Jet service was introduced by Braniff International Airways in December, 1959 with Boeing 707-220's between Dallas (Love Field) and New York (Idlewild). The Eastern/Braniff interchange from New York to South America received the jets in April, 1962. The new schedule included three weekly flights routed: New York - Miami - Panama City - Bogota; New York - Miami - Panama City - Lima - Sao Paulo (Viracopos) - Rio de Janeiro and New York - Miami - Panama City - Lima - Asuncion - Buenos Aires.
