Hamburg-Atlantic Line converted the Canadian Pacific liner Empress of Japan/Scotland into this remarkable ship, entering service in 1958 sailing transatlantic in the summer and from Port Everglades in the winter, with some interesting positioning voyages via the Mediterranean. It was one of the largest liners afloat, boasting indoor and outdoor pools, four orchestras for dancing and 14 public rooms. Decorated with dark woods and an eclectic mix of traditional and more modern furnishings, it had a very elegant appearance. Unfortunately it only lasted until 1966, when there was a serious fire while embarking at New York and Hanseatic was scrapped.
